It mixed with his regret, a tonic that was bitter as it filled him, poured down his throat and made a home in his veins. He moved through the night like a haunted thing, the image of Poe under him, blood pouring through his fingers, assaulted him. It filled his stomach with bile and tightened his throat.

That smile on her lips as she looked up at him, so Poe. Like he hadn’t just ripped out her throat. Hadn’t almost killed her. Deranged and beautiful.

The sight of that smile on her face, her jawline splattered with blood, shouldn’t make his stomach clench. Make him throb. It was sick. Vile that the sight of her surrounded by death and destruction was alluring to him.

In his life, there were seldom times he longed for an ear to hear his tormented thoughts. Where he wished there was someone who would offer their shoulder when he felt weary. Let him lay his head there as he whispered his haunted thoughts to them.

He’d tell them there was nothing in all of existence he wanted more than to have Poe in his arms — safe from him. Before her, he longed for the witch who cursed him to forgive him. To wipe the carvings on his bones clean and let him try again. Let him prove he could do better. Be better. Now, he would weather this curse for an eternity if it meant he could walk beside Poe. Lie beside her. Be with her.

He’d never eat again. Wither away to nothing until his body could no longer withstand the curse and his soul was untethered from his undead flesh. Freed but all the better for getting to love her, even if only for a little while.

And yet — he couldn’t. The scene tonight was proof of that, wasn’t it?

The elevator to his condo chimed, and he stepped out into his penthouse. An eternity cursed by a vengeful witch meant he had a long time to accumulate riches. Plus, he liked to be above it all. Liked to look down at the entirety of the city, like animals in a case. He needed only to reach down and pluck someone out. Devour them until they were nothing but bones.

It made him feel like they were right within his reach, while also making him feel confined. Locked away from them. The city safe so long as he stayed up in his tower.

Dex toed off his shoes and kicked them. They hit the wall before they fell to the floor. His bare feet against the hardwood floors grounded him slightly, but his thoughts still reeled. Tearing the shirt off over his head, he threw it to the floor and continued back through the living room and up the steps. He undid his pants, letting them fall in a heap in the hall as he walked along the catwalk above his living room to the master bedroom.
